Something I have learnt lots about this year is funding, so I decided to share some of my thoughts with you. Funding is a fickle part of our work in the NGO sector; often the effort we put into our funding proposal doesn’t nesscarly translate to securing funding. So this work becomes the invisible workload in any organisation.

From my point of view the most important part of my work has been matching our vision, with the vision of funders and trying to develop relationships which help us identify which programmes and initiatives funders would like to partner with. This work has been fascinating. I think linking our vision for change with that of the funders has been essential to increasing the likely hood of securing new funding this year.

We have had great funding results for our teen parent project for 2009 – 2010 and we are very grateful for the generous financial support from Kiwi Trust, ANZ Staff Foundation, Ministry of Social Development, Todd Foundation, Lotteries and the Tindall Foundation who have all partnered with us to achieve great things over the next two years.

We’re got funding to run seven early intervention programmes for young parents and pregnant teens, again deliver an innovative positive parenting project with peer leadership programmes, open events and seminars series, we are going to have professional support to develop our future funding plan and we are beginning an exciting new community research project. None of this is possible without funders sharing our vision for a better future for teen parents and their kids.

I remember my WoD interview from last year like it was yesterday, I recall telling the board members passionately about my goal to increase the financial sustainability of the Teen Parent Project. We have been really successful at achieving this goal and now we’re truly build momentum. We have a lot of work ahead of us to deliver the project while developing a new teen parent space and of course we have lots of other great ideas, we are also looking for funders who believe in our vision that teen parents need positive community support so they can develop their full potential

Frank Bunce – November 2008

Most of this month was spent helping to organise a fundraising event from which the MCF – and the Manukau community – would benefit financially as well as through an increased profile.
I was given an opportunity through an events company, Duco, to become involved with their bringing Sir Bob Geldof to NZ to speak at a dinner.
There is always a charitable bent to these affairs and because of my association with Duco the MCF was luckily chosen as beneficiary.
It was a most interesting time – securing auction items, selling tables, selling tickets, radio/TV/print promotions – a whole lot of time and a whole lot of effort went into what turned out to be a very successful night.
Geldof was inspirational, he covered his life from childhood through the band years and through into his humanitarian and charity work.
For over an hour he spoke with not a word heard from the audience.
He must have struck the right chords as the auction went extremely well!
I still meet people in the street who compliment us on the event, many were very pleasantly surprised.
On the night I was approached and given many contacts and business cards from people wanting to become involved and give to their community.
I have since been in contact with most and will look forward to helping them get the most out of their wanting to give.
Again I have been amazed at the wonderful people, from all walks of life, and from all different parts, who I have met doing this work.
I was also invited to speak at an MSD hui and at a men’s breakfast, two vastly different groups but with very much the same focus – I greatly enjoyed both sessions and continue to learn so much.
