Something I have learnt lots about this year is funding, so I decided to share some of my thoughts with you. Funding is a fickle part of our work in the NGO sector; often the effort we put into our funding proposal doesn’t nesscarly translate to securing funding. So this work becomes the invisible workload in any organisation.
From my point of view the most important part of my work has been matching our vision, with the vision of funders and trying to develop relationships which help us identify which programmes and initiatives funders would like to partner with. This work has been fascinating. I think linking our vision for change with that of the funders has been essential to increasing the likely hood of securing new funding this year.
We have had great funding results for our teen parent project for 2009 – 2010 and we are very grateful for the generous financial support from Kiwi Trust, ANZ Staff Foundation, Ministry of Social Development, Todd Foundation, Lotteries and the Tindall Foundation who have all partnered with us to achieve great things over the next two years.
We’re got funding to run seven early intervention programmes for young parents and pregnant teens, again deliver an innovative positive parenting project with peer leadership programmes, open events and seminars series, we are going to have professional support to develop our future funding plan and we are beginning an exciting new community research project. None of this is possible without funders sharing our vision for a better future for teen parents and their kids.
I remember my WoD interview from last year like it was yesterday, I recall telling the board members passionately about my goal to increase the financial sustainability of the Teen Parent Project. We have been really successful at achieving this goal and now we’re truly build momentum. We have a lot of work ahead of us to deliver the project while developing a new teen parent space and of course we have lots of other great ideas, we are also looking for funders who believe in our vision that teen parents need positive community support so they can develop their full potential
