All Black legend Frank Bunce is going head to head with Vodafone Warriors’ legend Reuben Wiki in a legendary game of touch rugby to support Kiwi youth. Legend!
The Vodafone NZ Foundation charity game will be the first time these two giants of New Zealand sport meet on the field. Ruben Wiki has returned to training especially for the event.
Frank Bunce, a World of Difference recipient with the Vodafone Foundation, is rapt to support the Vodafone Foundation Cup,
“It’s such a great cause that it’s great to be able to help and contribute where I can. The Vodafone Foundation encourages healthy outcomes for young Kiwis, particularly those young people who are most vulnerable and I’m delighted to be involved,” he says.
The Vodafone Foundation Cup will be held at noon, on Thursday 26 February at Victoria Park in Auckland. Oscar Kightley is donating his time to MC the event and team members will include charity partners, Vodafone staff and members of the public who will ‘bid’ for places on TradeMe. Items donated by Vodafone business suppliers have also been donated for auction on TradeMe and all funds raised will go to the Foundation for its work with Kiwi youth.
The event is part of a series of global celebrations, with 24 Vodafone Foundation’s around the world celebrating their combined contribution to local communities.
Vodafone NZ Foundation Chairman, Michael Stanley, is excited about bringing together so many charity partners.
“This is a great way to celebrate the work being done in support of Kiwi youth and we’re privileged to have two of the great New Zealand sportsmen front up to take part. With Oscar on board as well I’m sure everyone will have a blast and hopefully we can raise awareness of the issues and have fun at the same time.”
Monthly Archive for February, 2009
Woohoo! 2009 and my World of Difference year sure had an energetic start.
The first week back from holidays kicked off with an Arts Activism programme, where a group of young people spent five days imagining, designing and creating a public piece of art for the Ravensbourne Harbour Cycleway. Now everyone using the space can enjoy their creativity (just in time for BikeWise Month)!
There was barely enough time to wash off the paint before the Volunteer taster course began. This is a full-on, non-stop school holiday programme where a group of almost 20 teenagers ‘tasted’ a variety of different types of volunteering. Amongst the mix was a radio show on Toroa FM, a working bee at Women’s Refuge, gardening goodness at the Port Chalmers Patch and an evening grooving to some tunes with IHC Disability Services . The aim of the programme is to broaden perceptions of what volunteering is & to encourage young people to get active in their community… & it’s already been successful! Four of the teenagers from our last course are now engaged in long-term voluntary positions!
We’ve also been lucky enough to host a screening of the documentary “Invisible Children” which looks at how a long-running civil war has changed the lives of Ugandans. The non-profit group runs some great high school activism projects & it’s been a priveledge to share ideas.
In the evenings I’ve been working alongside Trade Aid and a really enthusiastic crew of young volunteers to create a mural promoting Fair Trade. We’re currently going through the design process, the ideas are flying &the final product is sure to be a jaw-dropper We’ll have paint-on-brush next week, so stay tuned for photos!
Our very own in-school programme begins in three high schools next week. The programme itself will offer students supported volunteering and social activism opportunities. It’s a big experiment for us and I’m looking forward to seeing what projects and ideas the groups create. We’re delighted to have Jackie Hunter from the University of Otago designing questionnaires to evaluate the programmes efficacy and make sure we stay on track.
Finally, we’re redesigning our website to make it more user-friendly, especially from a youth perspective. Hopefully we’ll be able to launch it in time for my next update!
A unique chance to play Touch with League and Union rugby legends is helping raise funds for Kiwi youth.

Members of the public can bid for places on their teams on TradeMe or search for Vodafone Foundation on TradeMe. The auctions include transport to Auckland from anywhere in New Zealand for the day.
The free event takes place at Victoria Park, Auckland from 12 noon and is part of a global celebration of Vodafone Foundation charities around the world.
Oscar Knightley is donating his time to MC the event and will be joined by members of the Vodafone Warriors and Auckland Blues.
The event is part of a series of global celebrations, with 24 Vodafone Foundation’s around the world celebrating their combined contribution to local communities. All funds raised will go to the Vodafone NZ Foundation for its work with Kiwi youth.
